| Addis Ababa “The New Flower” |
|
Addis Ababa, is one of the most beautiful cities in Africa, is a garden city of trees and flowers, whose climate is that of invigorating mountain coolness warmed by nearness to the equator. It is the 3 highest Capitals next to Rieo-De Janero and Lapaze. No wondered Emperor Menilk II, called it “New Flower” when he founded the city in1887. Addis , the capital of modern Ethiopia and the Political and commercial nucleus of the country is hatchway for most Tourists. This big sprawling, hospitable city is more than 2,500 meters high in the foot hills of mount Entoto. Modern buildings and wide-open boulevards stand side by side with historic churches, Palaces and monuments, as well as simple country huts, houses and old buildings. Several of this type of buildings remain from the Menelik II era and give an oriental touch with their charming wooden balconies. Since late 1950s Addis Ababa was recognized as the unofficial Capital of Africa, and thus was made the head quarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in 1958 and later, in 1963, chosen as headquarters of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), which later converted to the African Union (AU). Many regard the city as “Africa’s diplomatic capital.” This is a fitting reminder that Ethiopia has the longest history of freedom. |
